Meighen Ice Cap: changes in geometry, mass, and climatic response since 1959

چکیده
Remote sensing (satellite and airborne) in situ monitoring measurements indicate that the Meighen Ice Cap has thinned by 10 ± 3 m between 1960 2016, resulting areal shrinkage 32 km 2 (38%) total mass loss of 0.71 0.2 gigatonnes. Retreat ice margin along North basin up to 2.5 accounted for 50% area over 56-year period this study. A strong inverse relationship atmospheric summer temperature anomalies, balance (r = −0.74) indicates accelerated rates from are largely driven regional scale warming. Increases anomalies 1.9 °C 1960–2004 2005–2016 coincided with a five-fold increase surface melt across Cap. Since 1990s, Equilibrium Line Altitude been positioned above summit Cap, accumulation zone persisted first three decades early 2000s, cap more than 4 m, which is unprecedented record. Response time calculations based on 2006–2016 average data existence ∼3500 years, will completely disappear ∼175 years.

Climatic Records from the Dunde Ice Cap, China
Results from the first glaciological investigation of the Dunde ice cap demonstrate that a long, highly temporally resolvable climatic ice-core record is preserved in this ice cap. Measurements of stratigraphy, microparticle concentrations, liquid conductivity, and oxygen-isotope ratios from three snow pits in 1984 suggest that the annual accumulation is approximately 200 mm (water equivalent)....
متن کاملMass Balance and Area Changes of Four High Arctic Plateau
Small, stagnating ice caps at high latitudes are particularly sensitive to climatic fluctuations, especially with regard to changes in ablation season temperature. We conducted mass balance measurements and GPS area surveys on four small High Arctic plateau ice caps from 1999–2002. We compared these measurements with topographic maps and aerial photography from 1959, and with previously publish...

متن کاملResponse of Residual Co Ice Cap to Climate Changes on Mars
Introduction: Partitioning of CO on Mars plays an important role in controlling the state of martian climate. On Mars, CO is exchangeable among the atmosphere, polar-caps and regolith. The existence of plural reservoirs may allow multiple climate states even when the boundary conditions are fixed. For example, when the total amount of CO is given, the climate could be either warm or cold depend...
